Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia opposes an arms race in outer space. Earlier, the Ministry of Defense successfully tested an anti-satellite system, the Izvestia TV channel reports. As a result, the inactive device "Tselina-D" was struck. The US State Department accused Russia of creating a threat.
"Unlike Washington, Russia has not fixed in its doctrinal documents the task of achieving military superiority in space. On the contrary, from the very beginning of the exploration of outer space, we have maintained a consistent line to prevent an arms race in outer space and preserve outer space for peaceful purposes. In this regard, we consider it necessary to start agreeing on an international legally binding instrument as soon as possible," Maria Zakharova said.
Experts remind us that the United States itself has carried out similar tests.
"The US discontent looks particularly cynical. They, despite the objections of China and Russia, shot down their satellite too, conducted tests of the same anti-satellite weapons only with their SM-3 missile back in 2008," military historian Boris Yulin pointed out.
