MOSCOW, Nov 16 - RIA Novosti. The US actions in space are assessed as a threat and are incompatible with the stated goals of the peaceful use of outer space, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
"The actions of the American side are assessed as a threat and are incompatible with the stated goals of the peaceful use of outer space," the statement said.
On Monday, space debris flew past the ISS several times at intervals of an hour and a half. Cosmonauts and astronauts hid in the Soyuz MS-19 and Crew Dragon ships docked to the station. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken then said that a cloud of one and a half thousand fragments appeared allegedly as a result of Russia's testing of anti-satellite systems. The US Space Command claims that an anti-satellite direct ascent rocket was tested, which hit the Kosmos-1408 satellite.
In December 2020, the US Space Command announced that the Russian Federation had conducted a new test of a rocket aimed at destroying satellites. The US Space Command reported on the previous tests of the Russian anti-satellite missile in April. Then the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that Washington was trying to justify its own plans to deploy weapons in space in this way.
For 40 years, Russia, and previously the USSR, has consistently advocated the development of a multilateral legally binding instrument that would prohibit the deployment of weapons of any kind, the use of force or the threat of force in outer space. The Russian Federation has repeatedly submitted drafts of relevant agreements to the UN General Assembly and the Conference on Disarmament. In June 2014, an updated version of the Russian-Chinese draft treaty on the prevention of the deployment of weapons in outer space, the use of force or the threat of force against space objects was presented at the Conference.
