Brussels. November 15th. INTERFAX - Belarus would behave differently in the situation with illegal migrants on its border with the EU if Minsk did not have Moscow's support, the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrel said on Monday.
"It is clear that Lukashenka is doing what he is doing because he has strong support from Russia," he said at a press conference.
"Even if Russia says it has nothing to do with this story, we see how Foreign Minister Lavrov explains what is happening in Belarus, blames Europe for what is happening. To be honest, I don't think Lukashenka would have acted if he didn't have strong Russian support," Borrel said.
Answering the question about whether there is a relationship between the events in Belarus and the situation with the presence of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine, Borrel said he did not know.
"I do not know whether Russian troops on the border with Ukraine are connected with migrants on the Polish-Belarusian border," Borrel said at a press conference.
The situation on the border of Poland and Belarus became more complicated on November 8, when several thousand migrants from the Middle East countries wishing to move to the EU approached the border with Poland from the Belarusian side. Polish officials called what is happening the most difficult moment since the beginning of the crisis on the border.
