Dubai. November 15th. INTERFAX - The new S-550 air defense system will have a long-range missile to intercept any targets, the head of Rostec, Sergey Chemezov, said.
"This is a work that never stops and will continue to be carried out in order to increase both the detection range and the range of the missile with the ability to intercept any targets. That's what the work on the S-550 is aimed at," Chemezov told reporters at the Dubai Airshow.
"We have not yet presented it abroad for export," Chemezov said.
He did not give any other details.
Russia is creating a new S-550 air defense system, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said earlier.
According to him, work on this system was discussed at Sochi meetings under the leadership of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The characteristics of the S-550 system and work on this system have not been previously reported.
The Russian Federation has the S-500 Prometheus, a new generation of long-range air defense systems that can shoot down targets in near space.
On August 23, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov told Interfax that the S-500 system is being mass-produced. On July 20, at the MAKS air show, Borisov announced that serial deliveries of the S-500 to the Russian military would begin this year. On the same day, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported on the successful firing of the S-500 and for the first time published footage of tests of this system.
The Defense Ministry then said that after the completion of the full test cycle, the equipment plans provide for the delivery of the first S-500 system to the air defense-missile defense association near Moscow.
