TSAMTO, November 12. The Belgian Armed Forces will acquire nine wheeled 155-mm self-propelled artillery units CAESAR NG (New Generation) of the French company Nexter Systems.
As reported by Armyrecognition.com With reference to information published by the Belgian Ministry of Defense, Brussels approved investments in the amount of 48 million euros for the acquisition of new artillery systems in the Strategic Vision document.
As previously reported by CAMTO, the Defense Ministers of Belgium and France signed a framework partnership agreement "Capacites Motorisee" (Motorized Capacities – CaMo) on November 7, 2018, which will allow the Belgian Ground Forces to completely re-equip the fleet of military equipment of the motorized brigade. The contract included the purchase of 382 Griffon multi-purpose armored vehicles and 60 Jaguar armored reconnaissance and combat vehicles.
One of the main goals of the CaMo program is to achieve such a level of interaction between the ground forces of the two countries that a Belgian army unit can be involved in French military operations without problems and vice versa.
Currently, the Belgian SV is armed with 32 units of 120-mm RT-61 mortars and 14 units of 105-mm towed LG-1 Mk II howitzers. With the new CAESAR self-propelled guns, the Belgian armed forces will significantly expand their fire capabilities.
CAESAR is a 155 mm wheeled self-propelled howitzer produced on a chassis with a wheel formula of 6x6 and 8x8. In 2008, the CAESAR 6x6 self-propelled howitzer was massively equipped with the French Ground Forces. The 155-mm CAESAR self-propelled gun on the 6x6 chassis is distinguished by exceptional strategic and tactical mobility. Both CAESAR variants are armed with a 155-mm/52 caliber gun mounted in the aft part of the cargo platform.
The 155 mm/52 CAESAR caliber allows the use of a wide range of ammunition, including KATANA guided artillery ammunition. The firing range of a high-explosive shell ranges from 4.5 to 40 km.
