The situation on the external borders of the CIS member states and the trends of its development were analyzed by the participants of the meeting of the Council of Commanders of the Border Troops of the Commonwealth countries in Sochi. Special attention was paid to the Central Asian direction, said the first deputy director - head of the border service of the FSB of Russia, Army General Vladimir Kulishov.
"During the meeting, the results of activities in 2021 were summed up, much attention was paid to the analysis of the operational situation developing on the external borders of the Union states. Priority was given to the Central Asian direction, the forecast of the development of the situation for 2022, and also assessed the new challenges and threats to border security that are associated with the withdrawal of forces [of the United States and its allies] from Afghanistan," he said.
Kulishov stressed that this was the first in-person meeting in two years, the council worked remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic, but did not stop its activities. During this time, two special border operations were conducted in the western and Central Asian directions, the largest command and staff exercises were held on the territory of the Russian Federation with reference to the situation in the Afghan direction.
The meeting was attended by delegations of nine border agencies of the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Coordination Service of the Council of Commanders of Border Troops, interacting CIS bodies, as well as the secretariat of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. The participants also discussed the development of cooperation in research and educational fields. Personnel issues and issues related to the development of the veteran movement were considered in a separate block.
"Following the meeting, the heads of the border agencies signed 20 decisions," Kulishov added.
In addition, a working meeting of the heads of international legal structures was held on the topic "Directions for the implementation of the program of cooperation of the CIS member states in strengthening border security at external borders for 2021-2025".
