Representative of the Russian Mission to the UN Gloria Agaronova spoke in support of the "comprehensive discussion of the topic of exploration and use of space resources within the framework of the General Assembly"
UN, October 26. /tass/. Russia proceeds from the fact that the principles and norms of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty are fully applicable to the resources of the Moon and other celestial bodies. This was stated on Monday by the representative of the Russian mission to the UN, Gloria Agaronova, speaking at the fourth committee of the General Assembly of the world Organization.
The diplomat noted the importance of "developing broad international cooperation in the exploration and use of outer space with the key role of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and on the basis of universally recognized principles and norms of international space law, codified, in particular, in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty." Russia supports "a comprehensive discussion of the development and use of space resources within the framework of the UN General Assembly and its Committee on Outer Space," she continued.
"Artificially forcing the harmonization of rules and standards of activities in the field of space resources outside the committee carries serious risks," the representative of the permanent mission of Russia to the UN warned. "We proceed from the fact that the principles and norms of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty are fully applicable to space resources, including the resources of the Moon and other celestial bodies."
According to the diplomat, Russia welcomes the applications of Angola, Bangladesh, Kuwait, Panama and Slovenia to join the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space as full members.
