The Inspector General of the US State Department, Diana Shaw, has notified Congress of the beginning of an investigation into the termination of diplomatic operations in Afghanistan by the administration of US President Joe Biden.
This is reported by Politico with reference to official data from the State Department and Congress.
An internal supervisory body will check the quality of the State Department's program for issuing special immigration visas. The inspection will affect the receipt by Afghans of permits to enter the United States as refugees and their resettlement, as well as the emergency evacuation of the American embassy in Kabul, "including the evacuation of US citizens and Afghans."
The inspection will be carried out jointly with inspectors of other departments. So the Inspector General of the Pentagon will assess the unsuccessful drone strike in Kabul, which killed ten civilians, and will also analyze in detail the process of verification by the Ministry of Defense of evacuated Afghans.
The monitoring bodies were particularly interested in the State Department's program to provide Afghan interpreters, their families and others who worked for the American government with the opportunity to emigrate to the United States. According to the publication, the special program, launched in 2009, suffered from bureaucratic problems. Before the August evacuation, about 18 thousand applications were under consideration.
Earlier it became known that the United States is not going to resume evacuation from Afghanistan on military flights, now people will leave the country only on civilian aircraft. The head of the press service explained that by doing so, the United States wants to make sure that the Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) fulfills its promises and gives people the opportunity to leave the country.
The evacuation of American citizens officially ended on August 31. After that, US President Joe Biden addressed the nation, saying that the withdrawal of troops from the republic would mark the end of attempts to rebuild other states, recalls Lenta.ru .
