Russian-Iranian cooperation continues to develop consistently. Despite the difficult situation due to the coronavirus pandemic, contacts remain quite intense, Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov said on Monday, October 18, at talks in Moscow with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Hossein Bagheri.

According to Gerasimov, the positions of the two states coincide or are very close on most of the key issues on the regional and global agenda. The Chief of the Russian General Staff called Iran Russia's closest partner. "Relations between our countries are based on long-standing traditions of friendship and cooperation. They are distinguished by a high level of trusting political dialogue and mutual understanding, readiness to coordinate approaches on a wide range of issues of mutual interest," Gerasimov said.

At his suggestion, the generals discussed the most important aspects of the interaction of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and Iran at the talks. Moscow and Tehran have opportunities to further expand such relations. Mohammad Hossein Bagheri believes that the growing ties between the military of Iran and Russia can serve as an impetus for this. "Cooperation between our countries continues to expand in various fields. A clear example of this cooperation is our fruitful cooperation in Syria. Within the framework of this bilateral cooperation, special attention is paid to the expansion of military bilateral cooperation. We have been cooperating in the fight against terrorism for more than ten years. Especially in Syria. And we also support each other and consult on various issues that arise, including in the region and the world," the chief of the Iranian General Staff said.

He also recalled that several agreements have been signed and are being implemented between the two countries - both at the level of presidents and at the level of governments. "This once again underlines the high importance attached to these relations in our countries," Mohammad Hossein Bagheri stressed. The military commander thanked his colleague for the invitation to come to Russia and for the fact that a group of Iranian ships was received in St. Petersburg for the first time as part of the Main Naval Parade.
