Brussels. October 2. INTERFAX - China is pursuing a policy that harms peace in the region, Taiwan's Prime Minister Su Zhenchang told reporters on Saturday.
"China (is) acting aggressively and harming peace in the region, while at the same time being involved in many acts of intimidation," Western media quoted him as saying.
"It is obvious that the world, the international community, increasingly rejects such behavior by China," he said.
The Taiwan issue arose in 1949, when the Communist People's Republic of China was proclaimed, and part of the Kuomintang Party settled on the island of Taiwan. Beijing insists on the "one China principle", according to which both the PRC and the Republic of China on Taiwan cannot be recognized at the same time. At the same time, almost all major states have unofficial cultural and economic offices of Taipei.
Relations between Beijing and Taiwan improved significantly between 2008 and 2016, when the Kuomintang representative Ma Ying-jeou was the head of the Taiwanese administration. However, since Tsai Ing-wen became the head of the Taiwanese administration in 2016, Beijing has increased military pressure on Taiwan.
The day before, when the Day of the Formation of the People's Republic of China was celebrated, the Chinese Air Force, according to CNN, sent 38 combat aircraft to the island's air defense identification zone proclaimed by the Taiwan administration - this is a record number since Taiwan began publishing such reports. According to the Taiwanese side, the Chinese Air Force planes flew to Taiwan in two waves. In the afternoon, 25 planes flew towards the island, in the evening - 13 more.
Meanwhile, the media remind that against the background of such relations between Beijing and Taipei, the United States and a number of Western countries are trying to demonstrate "freedom of navigation" in the Taiwan Strait. Earlier, US, Canadian, Australian and French warships passed through it, causing protests from Beijing.
