The Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia approved amendments to the "Law on Military Service".
From now on, Latvian military and border guards are entitled to use service firearms in peacetime.
It is noted that "weapons can be used during special operations, including in situations threatening the country as a result of military actions." It follows from the annotation to the amendments to the "Law on Military Service" that, in accordance with the current legislation, the National Armed Forces (NAF) have the right to conduct certain special operations.
The document also states that "the situation threatening the state as a result of military actions is illegal foreign military activity carried out against Latvia, including in peacetime," writes Eadaily with reference to lv.baltnews.com .
In order for a serviceman or a border guard to have the right to use firearms and special means in peacetime in conducting special operations, including in eliminating the threat caused by military actions, an appropriate regulatory act must be adopted.
