US President Joe Biden may again impose sanctions against the Chinese company Honor. This is reported by The Washington Post.
As it became known to media sources, the US authorities could not unequivocally decide whether to include Honor in the black list of the Ministry of Commerce. Being on this list deprives organizations of the right to purchase products and technologies created by American companies without the approval of the State Department. In the case of Honor, the company will not be able to sell its smartphones with pre-installed services from Google.
Sources said that the heads of the four state agencies have not reached a consensus on the fate of Honor and the final decision is likely to be made by President Biden. So, representatives of the Pentagon and the Ministry of Energy decided to support the addition of a Chinese corporation to the blacklist, while their colleagues from the Ministry of Commerce and the State Department opposed it.
According to The Washington Post journalists, the issue of adding Chinese corporations to the sanctions list is political. "Lawmakers are pushing the Biden administration to use export controls more aggressively to slow down China's growth in the technology sector," the authors noted. Representatives of Honor, contacted by the authors of the material, could not provide an operational comment.
Honor began producing smartphones with Google services and contacting American suppliers after its sale to Huawei in November. The United States added Huawei to the sanctions list in May 2019.
