The former commander of the Russian peacekeeping forces in Nagorno-Karabakh, Lieutenant General Rustam Muradov, positively assessed the work of Russian peacekeepers in this region. He said this to TASS at a meeting with participants of the All-Russian patriotic action "Watch of Heroes of the Fatherland" in Makhachkala.
"I assess (the activities of the Russian peacekeeping mission) only positively. The civilian population gives us an assessment - today life in Karabakh is in full swing. There are, of course, very complex issues, but the process is underway - the return of people, the solution of a number of problematic issues. Therefore, I think everything will be fine, " Muradov said.
He added that Russian peacekeepers will be on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh for five years after the conflict occurred. "The first five years are under an agreement signed by the heads of the three states. Subsequently, a decision will be made on the further extension of the Russian peacekeeping contingent, " the source added.
Hero of Russia Rustam Muradov completed his mission as commander of the Russian peacekeeping forces in Nagorno-Karabakh on September 6. Major General Mikhail Kosobokov has been appointed Commander of the Russian peacekeeping mission in the region.
The situation in the conflict zone around Nagorno-Karabakh escalated on September 27 last year. After a month and a half of fighting in the conflict zone, on November 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on the complete cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the document, the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides stopped at the occupied positions, a number of districts came under the control of Baku, and Russian peacekeepers were stationed along the contact line and the Lachin corridor.
