MOSCOW, September 1/ Sputnik Radio. The United States and Ukraine will continue to oppose the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, which they see as a threat to Europe's energy security.
This is stated in a joint statement by the leaders of the countries Joe Biden and Vladimir Zelensky, posted on the website of the President of Ukraine.
Washington and Kiev will support efforts to increase the capacity to supply gas to Ukraine from diversified sources.
Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky is on a working visit to the United States. His talks with Joe Biden, which began on Wednesday at the White House, will be held in a narrow and expanded format.
Nord Stream-2 is a gas pipeline with a length of more than 1,200 kilometers, which runs between Russia and Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Work on laying pipes began three years ago, they should be completed in the near future.
In July, Berlin and Washington issued a joint statement noting that the project requires the continuation of gas transit through Ukraine after 2024.
In turn, Gazprom said that it is ready to continue pumping fuel through Ukraine after this period, based on the economic feasibility and the state of the Ukrainian GTS.
Earlier, Sputnik radio reported that the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, demanded guarantees of joining NATO after the imminent launch of the Nord Stream-2.
