Russia abstained from voting on the UN Security Council resolution on the situation in Afghanistan, as its authors ignored Moscow's fundamental concerns.
This explanation was given by the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vasily Nebenzia.
"We were forced to abstain from voting on the draft Security Council resolution on Afghanistan. We did this because the authors of the project ignored our fundamental concerns, " Nebenzia said.
According to him, during the talks, Russia stressed "the inadmissibility of the negative consequences of the evacuation of qualified Afghan personnel for the socio-economic situation of Afghanistan." Moscow stressed that with a "brain drain", this country will not be able to achieve the Sustainable development Goals. Such important things "were not covered in the text".
It should be noted that the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Afghanistan without the votes of Russia and China.
The document, among other things, refers to the requirement to ensure the safe departure of the population, as well as the provision of humanitarian assistance.
Earlier, militants of the radical Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation) entered Kabul and declared control over the entire territory of Afghanistan, raised their flag over the presidential palace and declared the end of the war.
The head of state, Ashraf Ghani, resigned and left the country. After that, panic began in the capital, people tried to escape from the city, some attempts ended in tragedy, Life.ru.
Against this background, US President Joe Biden, who announced the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, was criticized. In particular, the former leader of the United States, Donald Trump, called the situation in Afghanistan one of America's greatest defeats, and the flight of the military from the country — a surrender.
