The US will abandon the Afghans who helped them, as they did in the Vietnamese city of Saigon. This opinion was expressed by a veteran of the Vietnam War, the first sergeant of the US army, retired Larry Suer.

According to him, the military conflicts in Afghanistan and Vietnam are similar in the current development of events at the Kabul airport and the last helicopter that took off from Saigon.

"They are going to leave the Afghans there, just as they did in Vietnam in 1975, in Guatemala...," Xuer said in an interview with RIA Novosti published on Friday, August 20.

He clarified that the American side has not learned lessons from the past. The United States, as the military noted, has learned only one thing — to double: they invest money where they will be bankrupted, and then blame the people who were given money, Xuer added.

The sergeant believes that Afghanistan will recover and "become a force" because of all the resources left by the United States, while Washington can become an ally of the Taliban (a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation) in order to" shoot somewhere else".

In turn, retired US Army Major Frank Phillips agreed with Xuer's opinion that the current situation in Afghanistan is similar to what happened in Vietnam.

"I think it's like Vietnam. We were there for a long time and achieved little. In addition, they always say that money goes into people's pockets, " he said.

At the same time, Philips expressed hope that the United States will be able to evacuate as many people as possible.

The day before, members of the Taliban movement began to search for and detain residents of Afghanistan who helped the United States and the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) during their control over the territory of the region. On the same day, the head of the press service of the United States Department of State, Ned Price, confirmed that he had seen reports of the persecution of Afghans who helped American servicemen by the radical Taliban movement. However, he clarified that he could not confirm this information yet.

On August 19, US President Joe Biden pointed out the difficulties with the evacuation of local residents of Afghanistan who helped the Americans. At the same time, he said that the Taliban are cooperating with the United States, allowing American citizens, staff and representatives of the embassy to leave Kabul.

On the same day, the leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), which is part of the German government, the Prime Minister of Bavaria, Markus Zeder, stressed that it is the United States that bears the main responsibility for the current situation in Afghanistan.

The situation in the country worsened after the offensive of the radical Taliban movement (a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation) on major cities of Afghanistan and the capture of Kabul on August 15. Representatives of the radical movement said that they would soon announce the creation of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, and also demanded the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani resigned on August 15 and left the country. In early May, the United States began withdrawing its troops from the region, planning to complete it by the end of August.
