The United States does not have a military presence in Syria that would guarantee security
Washington. August 19. INTERFAX-Terrorist threats from Syria or East Africa are more serious for the United States than from Afghanistan, American President Joe Biden said in an interview with ABC.
"There is a much more serious threat to the United States from Syria. There is a much more serious threat to the US from East Africa. There are much more serious threats coming from different places than from the mountains of Afghanistan, " he said.
"We don't have (enough) military personnel in Syria to guarantee that we are protected," the president continued.
He explained that the United States is able to cope with such threats coming from Afghanistan, but the danger from Al-Qaeda (banned in the Russian Federation) and other terrorist groups is higher in other parts of the world.
Biden stressed that it would be irrational to spend $1 trillion and keep tens of thousands of US soldiers in Afghanistan further, against the background of other problems in the world - in the Middle East, North and West Africa.
"But you don't think so... who is most disappointed that we are leaving (from Afghanistan-IF)? Russia and China. They would be eager for us to continue to be forced to do this, " Biden said.
According to him, the United States entered Afghanistan for two purposes - the victory over Al-Qaeda in this country and the elimination of Osama bin Laden. However, after fulfilling these tasks, the United States worked together in the field of counterterrorism, maintaining small forces in the country or region in case Al-Qaeda's positions were restored, the United States "engaged in nation-building" in Afghanistan.
"From my point of view, it never made sense," Biden assured.
