Twelve Ukrainian servicemen remained on the territory of the former US military base in Kabul, Afghanistan, after US representatives left the facility. This was announced on Tuesday, August 17, by the Ukrainian TV channel "24".
The sister of one of the servicemen, who has been serving in Afghanistan under a contract for two years, told the TV channel that no one gets in touch with the Ukrainians. In total, there are more than 40 people at the base, among them Ukrainians, Georgians, Romanians and Bulgarians. The Americans were evacuated from there.
According to the interlocutor of the TV channel, the base has already been visited by militants of the Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation) and took all the weapons.
According to the Ukrainian edition "Today", the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country is aware of the Ukrainians remaining at the base. The diplomats have already received letters with their passport data. At the same time, they cannot yet somehow influence the situation and promise to find options to take Ukrainians out of Kabul, possibly with the participation of European countries.
On the eve of the Ukrainian plane evacuated about 80 people from Afghanistan. Among them were not only citizens of Ukraine, but also the Netherlands, Croatia, Belarus, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It was specified that Ukraine intends to evacuate another 90 people.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that residents of Kabul are in a state of shock after the militants of the radical Taliban movement came to power in the country, citizens do not leave their homes unnecessarily.
Also on Tuesday, the Taliban announced a general amnesty for officials of the former Afghan government and called for the resumption of work in state institutions.
On August 15, Taliban militants entered Kabul, after which they declared the" end of the war "in Afghanistan, calling it the" liberation " of the country. They raised the flag over the presidential Palace in Kabul. During the talks, the Taliban declared their unwillingness to form a coalition government. The type of power and the form of government will be determined in the near future.
Representatives of the radical movement also said that they would soon announce the creation of an Islamic emirate of Afghanistan, and also demanded the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani resigned on August 15 and left the country. He called his decision a way to " avoid a massacre."
The situation in Afghanistan has worsened against the background of the US withdrawal of its military, who have been in the country for 20 years. During this time, it has not been possible to achieve a stable peace in the region and to establish the political situation in the country. The withdrawal of troops began in early May, it was planned to complete it by the end of August.
