Moscow. August 16. INTERFAX - The Military Academy of Strategic Missile Forces named after Peter the Great has begun training cadets for the operation of the new Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, which is due to enter service in 2022.
"Taking into account the peculiarities of the operation of the new Sarmat mine - based missile system with a liquid-fueled heavy missile, cadets have been trained in a new specialty," Vladimir Nesterov, head of the military education department of the Strategic Missile Forces, said in an interview with the newspaper of the Russian Defense Ministry Krasnaya Zvezda.
According to him, the cadets of the RVSN Academy are also being trained to work with the strategic missile system with the Avangard hypersonic combat unit.
"In the 2020/2021 academic year, a training model of the promising Avangard complex was assembled for the academy by the forces of the scientific and production association of Mechanical Engineering, "Nesterov said.
Flight tests of the new Russian intercontinental ballistic missile " Sarmat "will begin in 2021 and should be completed in 2022, the rocket should also start arriving in the Strategic Missile Forces in 2022, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on August 6, visiting the Krasmash plant (Roscosmos). This plant will produce the Sarmat rocket.
It was reported that the RS-28 Sarmat ICBM will replace the world's most powerful strategic mine-based missile RS-20V Voevoda (according to the NATO classification-SS-18 Satan) in the Uzhurskaya (Krasnoyarsk Territory) and Dombarovskaya (Orenburg Region) divisions of the Strategic Missile Forces.
In December 2019, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the first missile regiment armed with "Avangards"was put on combat duty near Orenburg.
Avangard is a new Russian strategic missile system with a hypersonic gliding cruise combat unit that develops a speed of about Mach 27 (Mach is the speed of sound). It was developed at the Reutov NPO of Mechanical Engineering (Tactical Missile Armament Corporation, KTRV).
