MOSCOW, 14 Aug-RIA Novosti. Russia poses a threat to the United States because of its attempts to "sow discord" in Congress and destabilize the situation in the country, said the former head of the National Center for Counterintelligence and Security of the United States, William Evanina. He is quoted by the RT TV channel.
According to Evanin, Russia and China have joined forces to "sow discord" in the United States, only the first allegedly does this at the federal level and within Congress, and the second – at the state level.
In particular, he said that Moscow conducts "illegal activities in cyberspace", and also organizes large-scale campaigns of" malicious influence " on social networks.
The former head of counterintelligence is also convinced of the intention of the two countries to manage the "vulnerable US supply chain", in connection with which he proposed to create a special unit in the intelligence agencies to develop ways of protection.
The West has repeatedly accused Russia of interfering in the internal affairs of third countries and cyber attacks. So, in the spring, the British and American authorities announced the involvement of the SVR in the attacks against SolarWinds.
Moscow called these accusations "nonsense" and "verbiage" and said that the accusations from Western countries are not supported by evidence.
