The United States has begun transferring additional forces to Afghanistan. The country's authorities intend to complete this process by the end of the week, said Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.
The transfer of forces to the Kabul airport is carried out to facilitate the export of American citizens, primarily diplomats, from the country.
"The movement of troops, which we announced yesterday, is happening right now. Part of one of the Marine infantry battalions is already there, in Kabul, the rest of the forces will arrive in the next couple of days. I assume that by the end of the weekend, the bulk of these three thousand, which we talked about yesterday, will be in place," Kirby said during a briefing. The speech is broadcast on the C-span website.
On this day, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Defense Minister Lloyd Austin held talks with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, informed him about the withdrawal of US civilian workers from Kabul and reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful settlement.
A day earlier, it was reported that the US authorities will reduce the number of employees of the country's embassy in Afghanistan in the coming weeks. In addition, it became known about the US intention to deploy additional forces at the Kabul International Airport.
The US Embassy in Afghanistan also called on the Americans to leave the republic immediately. According to the embassy, in case of financial impossibility to buy a ticket, Americans should contact the diplomatic mission to obtain a loan.
At the same time, the United States expressed confidence that if the Taliban (the Taliban movement, a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation) seize Afghanistan, this government will not have recognition in the world community.
The situation in Afghanistan has worsened against the background of the US withdrawal of its military, who have been in the country for 20 years. During this time, it has not been possible to achieve a stable peace in the region and to establish the political situation in the country. The withdrawal of troops began in early May, it is planned to complete it by the end of August.
On August 13, militants of the Taliban movement (a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation) captured the Afghan city of Lashkar Gah. A day earlier, the militants of the movement reported the capture of the second largest city of Afghanistan — Kandahar. In addition, they subdued the city of Herat, which is the third largest city in Afghanistan.
The militants also took control of the provincial capitals of Nimroz, Jowzjan, Sari-Pul, Kunduz, Takhar, Samangan, Farah, Baghlan and Badakhshan.
