Washington. August 13. INTERFAX-Former US President Donald Trump and former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo criticized the tactics chosen by the administration of current President Joe Biden regarding Afghanistan.
"The tragic unrest in Afghanistan, the completely open and destroyed border, crime at record levels, skyrocketing oil prices, rising inflation, and using the whole world to your advantage - do you miss me already?" Trump said.
Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in turn, shared the position of the former American leader.
"I don't know exactly how (the Biden administration is doing this), but we had certain conditions when we analyzed the possibility of withdrawing troops," the former US Secretary of State said.
"I hope that at this stage we are able to withdraw our people from there in a reasonable way that corresponds not only to the need to return Americans home, but also to make sure that this uncontrolled space does not become another hotbed for Al-Qaeda (a terrorist organization banned in Russia - IF), the Islamic State (a terrorist organization banned in Russia - IF) or any other radical Islamic terrorist group," Pompeo explained.
The United States signed an agreement with the Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) under Trump-in Doha on February 29, 2020: the United States and NATO pledged to leave Afghanistan by May 1, 2021, and the Taliban gave a number of guarantees in response. On the part of the Taliban, they talked about peace talks with the Afghan government, stopping attacks on the United States and its interests in the country, refusing to support terrorist groups.
After this agreement, the Taliban intensified offensive operations in the country. In turn, the new US President Joe Biden changed the deadline for the withdrawal of troops to September 11, 2021, and later it became known about the new deadline - August 31.
