The US State Department has approved the sale of Javelin anti-tank missiles to Georgia. According to TASS, with reference to the Office of the US Department of Defense for Defense Cooperation and Security, the transaction amount will be $ 30 million.
According to reports, Georgia has requested 82 Javelin FGM-148 missiles, as well as 46 launchers. According to the State Department, this deal will not lead to a change in the military balance in the region. At the same time, the US authorities believe that it will contribute to supporting "US foreign policy and national security by strengthening the security of Georgia, which is a strategic partner and a key player contributing to security and stability in the region." These systems, the US Department of Defense stressed, will help Georgia protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
It is noted that the US administration has officially notified Congress of the decision. Now lawmakers have 30 days to study this military contract and its possible blocking.
The first Javelin complexes were delivered to Georgia in January 2018. The current Georgian Defense Minister Levan Izoria said that the systems were placed "in a safe place".
