Washington. August 3. INTERFAX - The government of Afghanistan and the militants of the Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation) are still far from reaching a peace agreement, US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad said.
"They are still far from each other. They are trying to influence each other's positions on the terms (of a possible future agreement - IF) through actions on the battlefield, " Khalilzad said, speaking at the security forum in Aspen (USA).
He noted that Kabul needs to " realistically perceive what kind of political solution can be achieved."
Earlier, Khalilzad said that he expects to hold a meeting of the "expanded troika" - the United States, Russia, China and Pakistan-on a settlement in Afghanistan in the near future.
"There is surprisingly broad agreement at the international level on which settlement option (in Afghanistan - IF) will be acceptable," he said.
