The United States mission in Afghanistan failed, and the situation in the country almost got out of control of the official Kabul. This was announced on Wednesday, July 28, by the head of the Russian Defense Ministry, Sergei Shoigu.
"The development of events in the northern border regions of the country and the mass exodus of Afghans on the territory of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan show that the agreements between the United States and the Islamic Taliban movement (a radical movement, banned in the Russian Federation. - Ed.) are not being implemented, " he said during a meeting of defense ministers of the SCO member states.
According to Shoigu, the situation in the country is rapidly deteriorating, almost out of control of the authorities, and the Taliban movement controls most of the territory of Afghanistan.
In addition, the Russian minister pointed to concern about the strengthening of the positions of ISIL (a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation) and others in the country, which in turn led to an increase in the threat of their penetration into neighboring states.
"Thus, we are forced to state that the US and NATO mission in Afghanistan has failed, "RIA Novosti quotes the head of the Russian Defense Ministry.
Earlier in the day, Shoigu said that the Russian 201st military base will provide military assistance to Tajikistan if the security of this country is threatened due to the events in neighboring Afghanistan.
On the eve of the Taliban militants de-energized the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul. It was clarified that the Taliban blew up the power supply line in the Kilagai district of Baghlan province. This affected the power supply of Kabul. In addition, the Taliban took control of a number of points on the border with Tajikistan. Moscow also expressed concerns about the likely activation of IS terrorists (the organization is banned in the Russian Federation) in Afghanistan.
On July 24, US President Joe Biden and Afghan leader Ashraf Ghani agreed that the Taliban offensive contradicts the movement's declared support for a political settlement in the country. The leaders expressed regret over the death of Afghans, looting, arson of buildings and destruction of infrastructure.
On July 22, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko said that the north of Afghanistan is rapidly turning into a new hot spot, and this is one of the consequences of the withdrawal of US troops. Before that, on July 16, the head of the department, Sergey Lavrov, pointed to the degradation of the situation in Afghanistan. He stressed that with the departure of American servicemen, terrorist organizations have strengthened their positions in the region, and drug production has reached record heights.
The United States is currently withdrawing its military from Afghanistan, which has been in the country since 2001. The withdrawal of troops began in early May, it is planned to complete it by the end of August. Washington will leave about 1 thousand military personnel in Kabul to protect diplomats and the airport.
Against this background, analysts and political scientists predicted a sharp deterioration of the situation in the country.
