MOSCOW, July 20-RIA Novosti. For the first time, the Russian Ministry of Defense showed footage of test live firing at a high-speed ballistic target, carried out from the Kapustin Yar test site with the latest domestic S-500 anti-aircraft missile system.
The footage shows the installation of the S-500 and the launch of its rocket.
As previously reported by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the target was hit.
Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov announced the beginning of state tests of the S-500 air defense system in August 2020.
S-500 "Prometheus "(ROC" Triumfator-M") belongs to the new generation of ground-to-air air defense systems. It is a universal long-range and high-altitude interception complex with an increased missile defense potential and is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles. The promising system is capable of hitting not only ballistic, but also aerodynamic targets (planes, helicopters, other air targets), as well as cruise missiles.
The radius of destruction of the S-500 is about 600 kilometers. In addition, the system will be able to detect and simultaneously hit up to ten ballistic supersonic targets flying at a speed of up to 7 kilometers per second, as well as have the ability to defeat hypersonic missile warheads. According to its characteristics, the S-500 will significantly surpass the S-400 in service and its American competitor Patriot Advanced Capability-3.
