The United States seeks to ensure a military presence in Central Asia in order to influence the situation in the region, he believes
Moscow. July 12. INTERFAX-The creation of new US military facilities in Central Asia would not contribute to strengthening the security of the region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"I do not think that the emergence of new American military facilities in Central Asia would meet the security interests in this region," Lavrov said at a press conference on Monday.
He noted that a number of countries in the region, including Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are members of the CSTO, all questions about the presence of foreign military personnel on the territory of any member of the organization are subject to coordination within its framework.
"It is significant that none of these countries has submitted any appeals to the CSTO about the need to hold appropriate consultations," the minister added.
Lavrov stressed that, as stated in Washington, military resources in Central Asia are necessary in order to strike at Afghanistan if necessary. "I do not think that it is in anyone's interests to turn themselves into a hostage of such a policy, such intentions of the United States, causing retaliatory strikes," the Russian Foreign Minister said.
