The Haitian authorities have made a similar request to the UN
Washington. July 10. INTERFAX-The US State Department has confirmed that after the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moiz, the Haitian authorities asked Washington to send a group of military personnel to help protect infrastructure facilities.
"The Haitian government has requested assistance in providing security and conducting investigations, and we continue to maintain regular contacts with Haitian officials to discuss how the United States can help," The Guardian quoted a State Department official as saying.
White House press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that the United States will send a delegation including senior officials of the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security to Haiti as soon as possible to sort out what assistance may be needed.
The Minister for Voting and Inter-Party Relations of Haiti, Mathias Pierre, informed journalists about the request to the United States to send troops to protect vital facilities. He motivated the appeal by the fact that American President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken promised to help Haiti.
"The group that financed the mercenaries wants to create chaos in the country. An attack on gas reserves and the airport may be part of the plan," the minister said.
In an interview with CNN, he noted that the request concerns a limited number of military personnel-about 500 people.
Pierre also told reporters of some media outlets that the Haitian authorities had made a similar request to the UN.
The UN peacekeeping military mission in Haiti ceased operations in October 2019.
As reported, a group of well-armed mercenaries who took part in the assassination of President Moiz consisted of 26 Colombians and two Americans of Haitian origin, Haitian law enforcement officials said earlier.
"Foreigners came to our country to kill the president. There were (...) 26 Colombians identified by passports, (...) and also two Americans from Haiti, " the country's national police chief, Leon Charles, said at a press conference.
Colombian Defense Minister Diego Molano said that, according to preliminary information, the Colombians who participated in the murder of the Haitian leader are retired military personnel of the country. He assured that Colombia will take part in the investigation.
Haitian President Jovenel Moise was killed on Wednesday night in his residence, his wife was injured, the Haitian government said on Wednesday.
