Moscow. July 7. INTERFAX-The new-generation S-500 Prometheus air defense system has been successfully tested with combat launches of anti-aircraft guided missiles, said Sergey Babakov, head of the anti-aircraft missile forces of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS).
"Currently, a number of tests have been conducted with combat launches of anti-aircraft guided missiles at air targets. All tests have been completed with a positive result, " he said in an interview with the newspaper of the Russian Defense Ministry "Krasnaya Zvezda".
According to him, the promising S-350 Vityaz anti-aircraft missile systems have begun to enter service with the anti-aircraft missile forces and it is planned to receive the S-500 Prometheus.
"The characteristics inherent in the S-500 air defense system that make it possible to destroy, in addition to aerodynamic and ballistic targets, hypersonic weapons of all modifications, including in near space, allows us to say with confidence that there are simply no analogues of this system," Babakov said.
In April, the Russian concern Almaz-Antey announced that work on the new S-500 Prometheus air defense system was being completed.
In December last year, Deputy Defense Minister of the Russian Federation Alexey Krivoruchko said that in 2021 it is planned to complete the tests of the S-500 and take it into service.
On July 3 last year, the commander-in-chief of the Aerospace Forces, Sergei Surovikin, said that the S-500 would be able to destroy satellites and hypersonic weapons of all modifications in near space.
