Moscow. July 3. INTERFAX - The situation in the northern regions of Afghanistan is deteriorating and causes serious concern to the Collective Security Treaty Organization( CSTO), it is necessary to provide assistance to Tajikistan in ensuring the security of the southern border, Secretary General of the organization Stanislav Zas told reporters.
"In Afghanistan, in fact, the situation is getting worse. I will not say that it is catastrophic, no, but the situation there, of course, causes serious concern. There is a clear understanding of the need to assist Tajikistan in ensuring the security of the Tajik-Afghan border, " Zas said.
According to him, he visited different sections of this border, paid attention to the equipment of troops and the daily life of people.
"Of course, there is a need for assistance to border guards to ensure security at the border," the Secretary General said, speaking about possible support from the CSTO.
"But the fact that our countries have already provided some kind of assistance to Tajikistan on a bilateral basis is very good and welcome. Now we are developing an interstate target program of the CSTO to strengthen the Tajik-Afghan border, " Zas added.
The Secretary General of the organization pointed out that the CSTO records border skirmishes with the Taliban (the terrorist movement "Taliban" is banned in Russia), as a result of which there are victims from the Tajik side.
Answering a question about the presence of the Taliban near the border of Tajikistan, Zas said that he had seen them "not on the Internet, but live."
On July 1, the Council of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly adopted a statement of concern about the situation in Afghanistan and called on all political forces of the country to advance the peace process.
