Washington. July 2. INTERFAX-The American command against the background of the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan has decided to replace the commander of the contingent in this country, General Scott Miller, with the head of the Central Command of the US Armed Forces (CENTCOM), General Frank McKenzie, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said on Friday.
"Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has approved the transfer of command of our mission in Afghanistan from General Scott Miller to General Frank McKenzie... All the powers that General Miller currently has... they will be transferred to General Mackenzie in the coming weeks, " he said at a briefing.
He said that the change of command will take some time and will be completed later in July. According to him, the general has left Kabul so far and will return there in a few days.
Kirby also confirmed the information that appeared earlier that the US should complete the withdrawal of the contingent from Afghanistan by the end of August.
The United States and its allies must withdraw their troops from Afghanistan by September 11 this year.
The withdrawal of troops takes place against the background of the activation of insurgents from the Taliban movement in Afghanistan (banned in the Russian Federation). Since May, they have been conducting a large-scale offensive operation and often press government forces.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden denied reports that appeared in the media this week that the US could complete the process of withdrawing troops from Afghanistan in the coming days.
