The South Korean Defense Procurement Authority (DAPA) decided to create its own air defense system, similar to the Israeli "Iron Dome". According [...] to Yonhap, the development will begin next year and will be completed around 2035.
Over the past seven years, North Korea has developed new types of ballistic missiles and launchers. For example, in the spring, Pyongyang launched two new short-range missiles. South Korean media wrote that these were modernized KN-23s, created according to the type of missiles of the Russian Iskander complex. The South Korean military is also concerned about about a thousand artillery installations and missile launchers that the DPRK has installed along the military demarcation line. Most of them are aimed at Seoul and urban areas.
The creation of an anti-missile defense system to protect against a missile strike and artillery fire from the DPRK in South Korea has been discussed since 2017. It was about the technology of intercepting shells and missiles with a direct hit, like the "Iron Dome". The military also considered the option of buying an "Iron Dome", but abandoned this idea, deciding that the Israeli system would not be suitable for mountainous terrain. Last year, the South Korean Defense Ministry again promised to develop an air defense system in the long term.
The South Korean Defense Procurement Administration (DAPA) officially announced a project to develop an air defense system to protect the national infrastructure from the DPRK on June 28. Its prototype will be the "Iron Dome", which is now in service with the Israeli Air Force and the US Army. Development will begin in 2022 and will be completed approximately in 2035. No other details about the project were disclosed.
The Iron Dome inspires not only the South Korean military to develop their own air defense systems. Earlier we wrote about the "Indestructible Shield" — an American mobile ground-based system that can simultaneously hit several targets.
