Moscow. June 23. INTERFAX-Russia is determined to continue active cooperation with Algeria in strengthening security and stability on the African continent, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.
"We note with pleasure and satisfaction that Algeria, as a strategic partner of Russia on the African continent, shares our views on the problems of regional security, the fight against terrorism and extremism. It is important to counter these threats together, which have become another convenient tool in the hands of Western powers, " Shoigu said at a meeting with the Chief of Staff of the National People's Army of Algeria, Said Chanegriha, on Wednesday.
According to the minister, " as before, Russia is striving to create an effective system of international security based on the principles of equality and mutual respect."
"We highly appreciate the achieved level of Russian-Algerian relations in the military and military-technical fields. We are determined to continue active cooperation with Algeria in strengthening security and stability in Africa, " Shoigu said.
He said that during today's meeting "there is a great opportunity to exchange views on the situation in North Africa and the Middle East, to discuss topical issues of military cooperation."
Shoigu thanked the Algerian military commander for his participation in the Moscow Conference on International Security.
