MOSCOW, May 31 — RIA Novosti. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, called the existing agreements between Russia and Belarus a threat to Kiev.
The Ukrainian leader, in particular, is concerned about the prospect of deepening integration between Moscow and Minsk within the framework of the Treaty on the Union State.
"Today we have a very dangerous situation in Belarus on our northern border. Today, the army there is under the command of the Belarusian regime. But we see how Russia and Belarus are working hard on agreements with each other. Maybe they could turn on the defense, and then these countries can put serious pressure on us. Then Russia would have gained control over the Belarusian armed forces. From this side, we also see threats to ourselves-up to the real Union State," Zelensky said.
The Treaty on the establishment of the Union State of Russia and Belarus was signed on December 8, 1999 in Moscow. In December 2019, to mark the 20th anniversary of the document, it was proposed to adopt a program to deepen integration. A working group was established to develop proposals, the parties in total developed projects of more than 30 industry roadmaps. However, the program is still not accepted yet. Work continues on two integration roadmaps.
