US President Joe Biden, in a statement after the shooting in California, which killed at least eight people, called on Congress to stop the "epidemic of armed violence" in the country. The text was distributed by the White House press service on May 26.
"Once again, I call on Congress to act immediately, to hear the calls of the American people, including the majority of gun owners, and to help end the epidemic of gun violence in America," the statement said.
Biden also said that in memory of the victims of the tragedy, flags will be lowered at half-mast until the end of this week.
The attack occurred on the morning of May 26 at the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) facility serving the local railroad in San Jose, California. According to law enforcement agencies, eight people were killed, and another was hospitalized with injuries.
As it became known to the Associated Press, the US authorities have identified the shooter of the man. It turned out to be 57-year-old Samuel Cassidy, who worked in the transport department of the VTA. Among the dead were his colleagues. The police are establishing the motives of the man, who, according to the agency's sources, committed suicide.
Earlier, on April 8, the head of the White House said that in the United States there is an "epidemic of violence" with the use of firearms, and proposed to take a number of measures to control the proliferation of weapons.
According to Biden, the Justice Department should strengthen control over the sale of so-called ghost barrels, that is, free-sale kits that can be purchased and assembled from individual parts of weapons.
In addition, according to the US president, the country should strengthen control over the turnover of stabilizers, which increase the accuracy of shooting pistols.
