The US has left an air base in the southern province of Kandahar, Pentagon officials said.
The military base in Kandahar was one of the largest bases where US and NATO troops were stationed. At the height of the war with the Taliban, there were about 26,000 foreign troops on it.
Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Fawad Aman confirmed that the base has been handed over to the Afghan security forces and will be used for counterterrorism operations.
He added that so far, US and NATO troops have left one base and three military camps in Helmand, Balkh, Kabul and Kandahar provinces.
