The situation in Afghanistan is currently deteriorating, and in this regard, Russia and Tajikistan are working on planning a joint response to possible threats from this direction. This statement was made on Tuesday during a visit to Dushanbe by Russian Defense Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu.
According to him, against the background of the degradation of the situation in neighboring Afghanistan, the military of the two countries is "planning a joint response to possible threats, working out issues of practical interaction during the exercises."
The head of the Russian military department stressed that Russia and Tajikistan have common tasks to ensure security and maintain stability in the Central Asian region. With this in mind, Russia is supporting the neighboring state. "We pay special attention to bilateral cooperation in the field of defense, as well as to the functioning of the 201st Russian military base," Shoigu said at talks with Tajik Defense Minister Sherali Mirzo.
Last week, the joint tactical exercises of the units of the 201st Russian military base stationed on the territory of the republic and the Armed Forces of Tajikistan were held.
