The Syrian news portal Zaman Al-Wasl, citing its sources, reported that Russian troops in Syria are preparing to establish a "permanent military base" near the historic city of Palmyra (Tadmor) in the province of Homs.
The media claim that a new military facility of the Russian contingent in the Arab Republic is being built in the area of Mon al-Mazar (Jabal al-Mazar), about 13 km north of Palmyra.
The base will include a helipad. The runway at this facility is currently paved on the eastern side, its length is about 780 meters, as shown by satellite photos, notes Zaman Al-Wasl.
The total area that is being prepared for the Russian base is about 37 hectares, it is adjacent to the weapons depots of the Syrian Air Force, the publication adds.
