The Ministry of Defense of Lithuania refused to build a military training ground in the western part of the republic due to the natural features of the territory. This is reported by the press service of the department.
As noted in the Ministry of Defense, the assessment of the territories reserved for the construction of the landfill showed that due to natural features, they do not meet the needs of the army, do not allow them to conduct complex military exercises. Therefore, an appeal was sent to the Ministry of the Environment with a request to cancel the reservation of the lands specified in the feasibility study.
"The need for a new test site remains, so in the near future it is planned to announce a new tender for a feasibility study to determine potential territories suitable for the creation of a new military test site," the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The ministry stressed that the Lithuanian Armed Forces are now clarifying the criteria and technical specifications that will be put forward during the organization of the tender. It is also necessary to find out which place on the territory of the country is most suitable for the needs of military exercises and to assess the possibilities of expanding existing landfills.
The new feasibility study will be carried out in accordance with the revised requirements and specification. It is planned to include environmental, demographic, economic and geological criteria. In addition, it should be possible to simultaneously organize maneuvers for two battalions (more than a thousand military personnel with military equipment) and fire for two company units, he says Rubaltic.ru.
