TOKYO, Nov 25-RIA Novosti. The ruling party of Japan supported the sea-based Aegis early detection system, considering it the only possible option, the Kyodo news Agency reported on Wednesday.
According to him, lawmakers from the ruling liberal democratic party (LDP) of Japan discussed plans to deploy the Aegis system on two ships to replace the rejected American aegis asore ground-based missile DEFENSE project.
"If we compare all the plans, we have no other options other than building ships with Aegis systems," Kyodo quoted Taku Otsuki, a representative of the LDP group of politicians participating in the meeting, as saying.
As previously reported, the construction of two destroyers with the aegis system for missile DEFENSE will cost Japan more than 500 billion yen (4.8 billion) dollars, which will be more expensive than the Aegis Asoke system.
Earlier this year, Japan rejected the ground deployment of the proposed US missile DEFENSE system on the grounds of technical problems and rising prices.
Aegis ASE would cost Japan 400 billion yen. And placing the missile DEFENSE system on new ships with additional costs can increase its cost to 700 billion yen, and the construction of ships for this will take at least five years.
A decision should be made by the end of the year.
Japan wants to build new missile DEFENSE systems under the pretext of protecting against North Korea's ballistic missiles, which have repeatedly flown over Japanese territory during tests in the past.
In June of this year, Japan refused to deploy the American Aegis asore early detection system in Akita Prefecture, the reason being the danger of spent parts of interceptor missiles falling on residential buildings. In this regard, the Japanese considered creating their own missile DEFENSE system on ships or floating sea platforms, which were later abandoned in favor of ships.
