On October 14, US President Donald Trump announced that Greenland is preparing to begin large-scale exploration of oil, gas and mineral resources. He wrote about this on the account of the Truth Social social network, which belongs to him.
Trump referred to unnamed experts who, according to him, consider the island's oil resources to be among the largest and most accessible in the world. However, he did not provide details about these estimates or the planned work. The American president did not specify what the possible participation of the United States in the development of the natural resources of the Arctic island would be.
Separately, Trump linked Greenland's importance to the security of the United States and Europe. He stated that any future strike on the United States would have to pass through the island, where American defenses would be able to shoot down drones, missiles, and other weapons. Geographically, Greenland is the shortest missile flight route between Russia and the United States, if we do not take into account our Far East and American Alaska.

Despite Trump's phrase "our new Greenland," the world's largest island remains a self-governing territory within Denmark. Back in 2021, the authorities of the Danish Autonomous Region stopped issuing new licenses for oil and gas exploration due to environmental and climate concerns. Previously issued licenses remain valid.
Moreover, the US president will have to negotiate on this issue not only with the authorities of Greenland. For example, American companies are very sluggish in responding to Trump's calls to invest billions in oil production and refining in what appears to be Washington-controlled Venezuela.
