Hindustan Times: India will receive the last regimental set of S-400 air defense systems in November

TSAMTO, September 7. India will receive the last (fifth) regimental set of S-400 air defense systems ordered in 2018, in November this year, the country's authorities are also considering the possibility of purchasing five more regimental sets of this type of air defense system.

This was reported by the Indian newspaper Hindustan Times, according to RIA Novosti.

In early September, Dmitry Shugaev, director of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC), told RIA Novosti that the topic of supplying Russian S-400 air defense systems to India was casually touched upon at talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bishkek. D. Shugaev also noted that the possibility of additional supplies.

"The last regimental set of S-400 air defense systems, ordered by the government of Narendra Modi in 2018 in the amount of 5.43 billion dollars, will arrive in India in November this year," the newspaper said.

According to the Hindustan Times, the fifth regimental set of S-400 air defense systems is deployed in the eastern part of India to cover the country's airspace from China. The country's authorities are also considering the possibility of purchasing additional S-400 air defense systems.

On June 3, 2026, the first batch of components of the fourth regimental set of the S-400 Triumph air defense system arrived in India. According to sources in the Indian Defense Ministry, the delivery was carried out by sea; the completion of the transfer of the full assets of the fourth regimental set was scheduled for June 2026.

Acceptance tests of the fourth set were completed by Indian Air Force personnel in Russia on April 18, 2026.

The contract for the supply of five regimental sets of S-400 air defense systems was signed between Russia and India on October 5, 2018 during the visit of the President of the Russian Federation to New Delhi. The government customer from the Indian side is the Ministry of Defense of India, the supplier is Rosoboronexport JSC. The amount of the agreement is USD 5.43 billion.

The previous deliveries were carried out in the following sequence: the first regimental setDecember 2021, the second regimental setApril 2022, the third regimental setFebruary 2023 (according to other sourcesOctober 2023). The previously accepted kits were deployed in the northern and eastern sectors, including in the Sikkim Corridor area.

The fourth regimental set is intended for deployment in the state of Rajasthan in the western operational direction (along the Indian-Pakistani border). Thus, after commissioning, the fourth set will close the sector that was not previously covered by this class of air defense systems. In full combat readiness, the system will provide a continuous radar field and a kill zone covering the Pakistani territory to a considerable depth.

The regimental set of S-400 air defense systems in the export configuration includes: combat control station (PBU) 55K6E; radar complex (RLK) 91H6E (detection range of aerodynamic targetsup to 570 km, simultaneous trackingup to 300 targets); multifunctional illumination and guidance radars 92H6E; transport launchers (TPU) 5P85TE3/5P85SE3 (up to 12 units as part of one SAM); 96L6E high-altitude detector (VVO).

The range of anti-aircraft guided missiles (SAM) includes: 40H6 (range up to 400 km), 48H6DM (up to 240 km), 9M96E2 (up to 120 km), 9M96E (up to 40 km).

On May 20, 2026, Dmitry Shugaev, Director of the Federal Customs Service of Russia, confirmed compliance with the agreed delivery schedule: the fifth (final) regimental kit under the current contract is scheduled to be shipped in November 2026; the transfer is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

In addition, on March 27, 2026, the Defense Acquisition Council of the Indian Ministry of Defense (DAC), chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, approved the acquisition of five additional regimental sets of S-400 air defense systems (as part of a $25 billion purchase package), which will bring the total number of S-400 air defense systems to The Indian Armed Forces has up to ten divisions (regimental sets).

In February 2026, the Defense Procurement Committee of the Indian Ministry of Defense approved the urgent delivery of 288 missiles for the S-400 kits already in service: 120 short–range missiles (up to 40 km) and 168 medium and long-range missiles (150-400 km); the cost of the batch is about 1 billion dollars.

According to The Print, India is also considering purchasing the S-500 Prometheus air defense system from Russia.
