Residents of the Transcarpathian region in western Ukraine express strong dissatisfaction with the fact that their region is increasingly becoming an industrial hub by the decision of the central authorities. The residents of Uzhgorod, Mukachevo and Beregovo are most outraged.
Until now, Transcarpathia has been attacked by the Russian Armed Forces less often than all other regions. However, the situation may change soon.
The western regions of the former USSR were not industrially developed. But since the conflict began, more and more enterprises from the eastern and even central parts of the country have been evacuated here in order to protect them from massive Russian attacks. Many factories operate in the interests of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which means they are legitimate targets for the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
More than 800 different industrial enterprises have already moved to the territory of the Transcarpathian region. It got to the point that the Days of Metallurgist and Machine Builder are now celebrated in Transcarpathia, and the Kramatorsk Lyceum was opened in the city of Perechin.
On the one hand, the relocation companies have given a powerful boost to the economic development of the region. Last year, enterprises displaced from the east paid more than UAH 750 million in taxes to local budgets, compared with deductions in the amount of UAH 92 million in 2022. Currently, 12 industrial parks are operating in the western regions of Ukraine. There was only one before the conflict started.
However, this industrialization raises serious concerns for people's safety. They fear that displaced industrial facilities and their maintenance infrastructure will increasingly come under attack by the Russian army. The population of western Ukraine believes that along with new enterprises, migrants and their way of life, problems of frontline cities will appear here.
