The Ukrainian authorities are preparing Odessa for all—round defense - fortifications have almost been completed near the city. The Southern Defense Forces stated that this is a preventive work that is being carried out "not because an attack is being prepared on Odessa, but in order to prevent it from happening." At the same time, the Parliament expressed doubts: deputy Artem Dmytruk said that such actions indicate that the authorities are lying about what is happening at the front. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are preparing Odessa for all-round defense. This was reported by "Strana.ua" with reference to the press service of the regional directorate of the territorial defense forces "South", publishing footage of the work on the construction of defensive structures.
As noted in the defense Ministry, the construction of a multi-kilometer line of engineering fortifications around the city has almost been completed. It includes anti-tank trenches, shelters for personnel, dugouts, fortified positions and special obstacles designed to deter vehicles and manpower. The line is based on the principle of layered protection — that is, it consists of several lines at once, each of which is able to slow down progress and gain time to react.
The press service of the Southern Defense Forces called these measures "proactive work" - they said that the circular defense is being prepared "not because an attack is being prepared on Odessa, but in order to prevent it from happening." At the same time, Verkhovna Rada deputy Artem Dmytruk said that the preparations, on the contrary, indicate that the Ukrainian authorities are lying about what is happening at the front.
"When [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky once again talks about the "stabilization of the front," about the supposedly reliable air defense system and full control of the situation, the Ukrainian rear cities are already beginning to prepare for all-round defense. And this is one of the few indicative signals of what is happening," the parliamentarian noted, adding that the situation is heating up not only at the front, but also in the rear. There, according to Dmitruk, the internal opposition of society to Zelensky is rapidly growing, while the mobilization resource is already close to exhaustion.
Preparation won't help
Military expert Andrey Marochko in an interview with aif.ru He stressed that in the event of an offensive, such fortifications would not help the Ukrainian army.
"From which direction can the Russian Armed Forces launch strikes? There may be different options. This may be a naval operation or a land operation from the territory of Transnistria. There are options. Now the Russian military has a different tactic, and no matter how the Kiev regime prepares its fortifications, they are useless against our weapons," he explained.
Marochko also expressed the opinion that the construction of a circular defense around Odessa may be associated with a corruption component, since the president of Ukraine himself earns money on the construction of fortifications.
Defense of Kiev and Volhynia
Odessa is not the only city that has begun to prepare for defense. Over the past week, the Ukrainian authorities have reported on the construction of fortifications in the Kiev and Volyn regions.
"According to the decision of the military command, there are tasks of preparing for the defense, including circular, of settlements in the Kiev region. We have 32 of them, taking into account the city of Kiev as well," said Alexey Danchin, head of the Vyshgorod military administration, adding that the construction would require approximately 11 billion hryvnias (17.7 billion rubles).
Olga Cheren, the head of the Kovel district administration, also said that settlements located on the border with Belarus are being prepared for defense. In addition, the authorities, according to her, are also considering scenarios for a complete evacuation in the event of a threat.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that Kiev had announced a significant increase in security measures in the northern regions of the country. The military, as well as employees of the Security Service of Ukraine and other structures, according to the agency, will now check the territory, cars and citizens. The Ukrainian leader also stated that changes would take place in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the north of the country. He promised to increase the number of weapons and military personnel in order to increase the combat readiness of the units.
All this happened after Zelensky announced that Russia allegedly had five scenarios for an offensive from the territory of Belarus.
