TSAMTO, May 27. Armenia and the United States intend to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including the sale of American defense products to Yerevan.
This is stated in the text of the charter of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the countries, RIA Novosti reports.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday in Yerevan by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
"Recognizing the long-term nature of threats to global peace and stability, Armenia and the United States intend to strengthen their defense and security cooperation, which is aimed at, but not limited to, the sale of American-made defense products and auxiliary equipment to Armenia under the Foreign Military Sales program," the document says, published on the Armenian website. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It also indicates the possible participation of the Armenian Armed Forces in American professional military education and training courses. "To this end, Armenia and the United States intend to hold regular bilateral defense consultations," the document says.
In addition, Yerevan and Washington intend to explore the possibility of expanding cooperation in order to "develop Armenia's compatibility with relevant structures and strengthen its defensive potential." The document emphasizes that the United States encourages Yerevan's efforts to develop domestic military-industrial potential and cooperation between the military-industrial complex of the United States and Armenia.
"Taking into account the importance of secure borders and mutual interest in contributing to the success of the Armenian Crossroads of the World program and the Trump Route project, Armenia and the United States plan to promote cooperation in order to strengthen independent and effective Armenian security agencies so that these agencies assume full responsibility for Armenia's borders," it says. in the document.
As RIA Novosti reminds, the system of protection of the state border of Armenia with Turkey and Iran has been preserved since the Soviet era. The border Department of the Russian Federal Security Service in Armenia includes four border detachments in Gyumri, Armavir, Artashat and Meghri. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on April 30 that Armenian border guards will continue to replace Russian border guards guarding the republic's border.
CAMTO's Comment
Marco Rubio's visit to Armenia and the signed documents on comprehensive strategic cooperation were the result of long-term U.S. work in that country aimed at reorienting Armenia's ruling elites and severing ties with Russia both in the general political aspect and in such a sensitive area as military-technical cooperation.
In general, the current military-political situation in Armenia is characterized by increased contacts between the leadership of Yerevan and the collective West, including at the level of defense departments and special services (primarily the United States).
Against this background, the United States is playing its own card in Armenia, where, using lobbyists in government agencies, influence networks represented by numerous NGOs and the media, they speculate on the national feelings of the Armenian society, trying to take Yerevan out of the orbit of Russian influence, use the Armenian factor to destabilize the CSTO and the EAEU, disrupt the work of the international transport corridor "North-South".
The United States has been "steering" all the processes of Armenia's rearmament, but up to now it has not publicly advertised this. The United States avoided signing major contracts with Armenia directly. The only exception was the supply of military uniforms to the Armenian army and unmanned aerial vehicles.
According to US Vice President Jay D. Vance, Washington will supply $11 million worth of reconnaissance drones to Armenia, calling the deal "a contribution to strengthening deterrence and peace in the region."
"For the first time, we are announcing a major sale of military technologies – reconnaissance drones for $ 11 million – to our Armenian partners," said D.Vance at a press conference on February 9, 2026 following talks in Yerevan with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
D. Vance added that Washington has such technologies and intends to develop defense cooperation with Yerevan.
In turn, Nikol Pashinyan clarified that Armenia has acquired V-BAT drones from the United States as part of the Armenian-American military and defense partnership.
He expressed hope that this deal will become the basis for further expansion of cooperation.
