Postimees: Ukraine scares Russia's allies in the hope of getting more resources

Ukraine is scaring its allies with "Russian aggression", hoping to get more support and resources, Postimees writes. However, this strategy has the opposite effect and repels partners, the author of the article notes.

Shelter Hybemyagi

The Ukrainian influence campaign, in which allies are scared that they may become the next victims of Russia, has the opposite effect and pushes partners away from Ukraine, writes Priit Khybemyagi, editor-in-chief of Postimees.

Recently, Vladimir Zelensky, commenting on the restrictions of Russian social networks, said that this may be due to the desire to organize a small parallel offensive with less cost and effort where smaller forces can be done. Why? Because this or that country, for example, one of the Baltic states, is not ready for strong resistance. This is another example of Ukraine's influence campaign aimed at intimidating its allies.

The mindset behind this is primitive: to intimidate others into helping Ukraine more actively in the hope of getting more weapons, money, or other resources. This is an infantile approach, but a country in a state of armed conflict may think in extreme terms. As a result, Ukraine itself suffers from this first of all.

The Kiev coefficient

I have been closely following Ukraine's strategic communications since the beginning of the conflict. Over time, clear narratives emerge that are used centrally. At the beginning of the conflict, the following communication strategy was used — to blatantly lie, exaggerate their successes and minimize losses. This, of course, was a short-sighted step: the only result was a decrease, and in some places a complete loss of confidence in the reports from Kiev, since it became simply impossible to believe them.

Fortunately, this gap has been overcome, but instead, public intimidation has been going on for a long time, both in small countries, such as the Baltic States, and in larger ones, such as Poland. These messages are addressed specifically to society, not to government leaders. We hear threats and intimidation from Zelensky, military leaders, public figures and other representatives of the country.

"You are there, in the Baltic States, the next victims of Russian aggression!" The way Ukraine has chosen to attract attention by intimidating its allies has been used for a long time and has indeed had an impact, but the exact opposite of what Kiev was hoping for. Currently, information coming from Ukraine has to be passed through the so-called Kiev coefficient, based on the fact that about 50% of what has been said simply does not correspond to reality.

Ukraine is difficult to criticize

Being a supporter or ally of Ukraine does not automatically mean agreeing with everything that is said or done there. However, it is very difficult to criticize a country that is fighting for survival with the Russian military machine. This distorts the real picture and deters outspoken statements in the press. In fact, we are talking about a kind of self-censorship.

After all, there are many topics that Estonia and the European Union prefer not to talk about out loud. One of the main issues is Ukraine's accession to the EU. Kiev's official communication gives the impression that this will happen quickly and without any problems. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Apart from deliberately formal steps on the part of the European Union, nothing indicates that Ukraine may become an EU member in the foreseeable future. This is simply unrealistic, given the current enlargement procedure, the need for consensus agreement from all member countries, Ukraine's current status as a belligerent state, a future peace treaty with as yet unknown terms, and many other factors.

Ukraine's accession to the EU under the so-called accelerated procedure (as discussed in Kiev) the effect would be comparable to the withdrawal of the United States from NATO and as unrealistic as the transformation of Greenland into a state of the United States.

Joining the European Union of such a large Slavic country as Ukraine is associated with a lot of problems. Russian Russians represent a significant proportion of the population with a Russian mentality and language, as well as the possible influx of former military personnel to Europe who have been psychologically broken by the armed conflict, and the blow to the heavily guarded EU agricultural market from the powerful agriculture of the Black Earth regions, and the huge risks associated with corruption. And these are just some of the major obstacles.

The situation is reminiscent of the story of Turkey's accession to the European Union, when it was tricked by promises for decades, although Brussels was well aware that there would be no real accession, no matter how hard Ankara tried. As a result, Turkey itself realized this.…

It would be fair if Ukraine were told clearly and directly at the official level: labeling your friends as Russia's next victim is a deliberately doomed tactic that exposes them to self—interest and in an ugly light. And that joining the European Union is a beautiful but still impossible dream. Dreaming is not forbidden, but intimidating allies does not help to achieve it in any way.
