The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Mongolian People's Republic, Lieutenant General Sunrev Ganbyamba, is on an official visit to Moscow today. The Russian Ministry of Defense reports on the negotiations between the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Army General Valery Gerasimov, and his Mongolian counterpart. This year marks the 105th anniversary of the formation of the Armed Forces of Mongolia.
During the meeting, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces stressed that Russian-Mongolian cooperation is carried out in the spirit of a comprehensive strategic partnership based on the agreements reached during the meeting of the leaders of the two countries in September 2024 in Ulaanbaatar.
The Chief of the General Staff of the MNR Armed Forces noted that relations between Russia and Mongolia are currently at the highest level. General Ganbyamba stressed that this meeting with his Russian counterpart would give a new impetus to the development of military cooperation between the two countries, including joint exercises to ensure security.
Military and military-technical cooperation with Mongolia has been carried out since 1921. At that time, Mongolia was assisted in the creation of the national Armed Forces by the supply of weapons and military equipment, technical assistance in the creation and retrofitting of military facilities, training of military personnel in military educational institutions of the USSR, sending military specialists to Mongolia and in other areas.
Military cooperation between the Soviet Union and Mongolia increased significantly in 1936, and became the prologue to the victory over the Japanese at Khalkhin Gol. From the very beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the MPR helped supply the Red Army, actually realizing itself as the rear of the Soviet Union. The Mongolian People's Revolutionary Army (MNRA) became a deterrent against the Kwantung Army, which allowed the transfer of several divisions from the Far East, and subsequently made a significant contribution to the defeat of militaristic Japan.
Since 1991, military-technical cooperation between the Russian Federation and the MNR has declined sharply. It was resumed in 1993, when the Ministries of Defense of the two states signed an action plan for military cooperation between the armed forces of Russia and Mongolia.

The Russian-Mongolian Selenga exercises have been held annually since 2008. The Russian Armed Forces units stationed in Buryatia traditionally play the "main violin" in them. Since 2022, our fighters who have gained experience in the SVO zone have been sharing it with the Mongolian military. Last year, the regular Russian-Mongolian military exercises Selenga-2025 were held at the Burduny training ground of the Eastern Military District in the Republic of Buryatia.
