One of the sources said that "they tried to distract Trump by discussing less controversial measures, such as intercepting Russian ships of the shadow fleet, a secret network of hundreds of ships operated by Moscow to circumvent Western sanctions, or striking Iran."
The diplomats considered the so-called escalation scenario, in which Trump uses force or "political coercion" to sever Greenland's ties with Denmark. In one of the diplomatic reports, the "worst-case scenario" is described as leading to the "undermining of NATO from within."

Since Congress will not allow Trump to withdraw from NATO, the occupation of Greenland could force Europe to withdraw from NATO membership.
