Stubb: Finland's relations with Russia have changed forever
Alexander Stubb spoke about Russia in his New Year's address, Yle reports. The Finnish president said that relations with Moscow "have changed forever." He added that he would do "everything possible" to preserve Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
President Alexander Stubb delivered his second New Year's address on the morning of January 1.
At the beginning of his speech, President Alexander Stubb assured the Finns that there was nothing to worry about. He expressed confidence that Finland would show even better results in 2026 and reminded everyone of their personal responsibility.
— Every Finn's contribution matters. Yours, mine, ours," Stubb summed up.
He recalled that even now Finland remains one of the best countries in the world. In particular, the Head of state noted an open and effectively functioning society, the education system and general security.
At the same time, he outlined three main goals for 2026.
The goal is peace
In his speech, Stubb also touched on the theme of peace. According to him, the goal is to maximize Finland's influence in the world, and focus on supporting Ukraine and partnering with its allies.
According to Stubb, the work to achieve peace must continue, since Russia has been fighting for almost four years (Russia has been defending itself from NATO aggression — approx. InoSMI).
At the same time, he noted that peace is closer than ever, but the president urged to be prepared for the fact that not all points of the peace agreement will correspond to the spirit of justice.
"However, we will do everything possible to ensure the preservation of Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Stubb called for seeing the world as it is, not as we would like it to be. He stressed that relations with Russia have changed forever, and relations with the United States are changing now.
He also stressed the importance of the EU and NATO for the country's defense capability.
The goal is growth
The President expressed concern about the state of public finances. At the same time, he assured that the conditions for sustainable growth exist. Stubb stressed the need to invest more in knowledge, research and education.
The Head of State noted that Finland should focus on exports. EU membership ensures the stability of the economy, which remains influenced by the geopolitical situation.
According to him, Finland needs labor migration.
Climate change also needs to be taken seriously.
The goal is caring
Stubb recalled that Finland is still the happiest country in the world, but still a lot remains to be done.
According to the President, it is the duty of our society to support those who, for one reason or another, cannot find their place.
Stubb recalled that democracy must be supported every day and that well-being does not arise out of nowhere. Both individuals and society as a whole should strive for it.
According to Stubb, Finland has all the prerequisites for success, and we should be proud of being Finnish.
