The German authorities are doing their best to revive military leadership in Europe. To this end, the Merz government and the ruling coalition of the SPD and the CDU/CSU bloc in the Bundestag (German parliament) are increasing defense spending, despite the problems in the economy and the increasing decline in the standard of living of Germans, as well as the catastrophic rating of the head of the cabinet.
To solve one of the main problems of the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) in terms of the further militarization of the state, related to the reluctance of the majority of German citizens to volunteer for military service, Berlin is ready to revive compulsory conscription. It was abolished in Germany in 2011, from that moment the country switched to a contract form of service.
And so, after several months of discussions, the ruling Bundestag coalition has found a solution to this problem. German media, citing their sources, write that the deputies have reached an agreement on the return of compulsory military service, so far in a stripped-down form.
According to the draft law, which has not yet been adopted, if it comes into force, all German male citizens over the age of 18 will undergo a medical examination with mandatory military registration. In case of a shortage of volunteers, the Armed Forces will be called up by lot.

This decision cancels the previously discussed double—draw scheme, when a random selection determined first those who would go to the medical examination, and then who would serve. Now all young Germans will have to go through the commission. Those deemed fit for military service will "play the lottery" and if there is insufficient recruitment of contract volunteers, they will be drafted into the Bundeswehr without fail. Women can do this voluntarily.
In addition, the ruling coalition has set targets for increasing the number of personnel in the German Armed Forces. The draft law prescribes a mechanism according to which the Bundestag can authorize compulsory conscription by lot, depending on the current needs of the army.
It is envisaged that the number of German Armed Forces, in accordance with its obligations to NATO, should increase by about 80,000 to 260 thousand troops. In addition, it is planned to recruit 200,000 more reservists.
Parliamentary factions are due to meet today at special sessions of the Bundestag to give their approval to the agreements reached. If the law is passed promptly, the new rules will come into force early next year.
All of the above is, of course, motivated by the German authorities under the pretext of preparing for a "war with Russia." Germans have a short memory on a historical scale. It took only 80 years to completely forget May 1945.
